Sound-induced Flash Illusions as a Paradigm of Multisensorial Integration: a Review Article
نویسنده
چکیده
Sound-induced flash illusions, first described in 2000, provide a valid example of perception as a multisensorial experience where all sensorial modalities work together. Audio-visual illusions can be classified in “fission” and “fusion” illusions. Whether one flash is accompanied by two or three auditory stimuli (or beeps), it’s often perceived as multiple flashes (fission illusion), by contrast when two or more flashes are presented along with one beep, subjects often report perceiving less number of flashes (fusion illusions). Although vision has been often considered as the dominant sensory modality in humans, sound-induced flash illusions underline the leading role of acoustic stimuli in the cross-modal perception. The purpose of this review is to summarize the current knowledge about the underlying mechanisms of audiovisual illusions such as cortical excitability and connections between visual and acoustic cortex.

Clarifying signal detection theoretic interpretations of the Müller-Lyer and sound-induced flash illusions.
In a recent article, Witt, Taylor, Sugovic, and Wixted (2015) made several claims about the way the Müller-Lyer and sound-induced flash illusions should influence the signal detection theory criterion and sensitivity measures, c and d'. Here, we address some crucial conceptual inconsistencies in their simulation of the Müller-Lyer illusion and clarify a previous analysis of the sound-induced fl...

Idiopathic synesthesia, a neurological condition in which a stimulus in one sense generates a concurrent experience in a different sense, is often considered an example of multisensory integration. Consequently it has been suggested that synesthetes should experience multisensory illusions more consistently and compellingly than typical participants. To test this we measured the sound induced f...
متن کاملThe sound-induced flash illusion reveals dissociable age-related effects in multisensory integration
While aging can lead to significant declines in perceptual and cognitive function, the effects of age on multisensory integration, the process in which the brain combines information across the senses, are less clear. Recent reports suggest that older adults are susceptible to the sound-induced flash illusion (Shams et al., 2000) across a much wider range of temporal asynchronies than younger a...

Selective attention and multisensory integration are fundamental to perception, but little is known about whether, or under what circumstances, these processes interact to shape conscious awareness. Here, we used transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) to investigate the causal role of attention-related brain networks in multisensory integration between visual and auditory stimuli in the sound-...
متن کاملA neurocomputational analysis of the sound-induced flash illusion
Perception of the external world is based on the integration of inputs from different sensory modalities. Recent experimental findings suggest that this phenomenon is present in lower-level cortical areas at early processing stages. The mechanisms underlying these early processes and the organization of the underlying circuitries are still a matter of debate. Here, we investigate audiovisual in...
